Job Description: 

Reporting to the Production Director and Director of Brewery Operations, Jack’s Abby is in need of a Head Brewer who will be responsible for brewhouse operations, management of contract beer partners, recipes, inventory, and training of all brewers on our 60bbls CFT brewhouse. This will be a public facing position and will require the ability to speak at events and represent the brewery with the public.

Job Responsibilities Include

  • Working with Production Director to:
  • Set schedule
  • Manage brewhouse staff

  • Working with the Director of Brewing Operations to: 
  • Manage our contract brewery partners
  • Responsible for brewery related inventory
  • Make sure brewing data is being inputted properly and in a timely manner into Ekos 
  • Recipe additions
  • Other brew related data management

  • Brewhouse Operations
  • Recipe development 
  • Ability to create new recipes for production brewing (60 bbl - 4 vessel brewhouse)
  • Ability to scale recipes from the Pilot System
  • Strong knowledge of ingredients and suppliers
  • Thorough understanding of brewhouse processes and reasoning (Mash temp/enzymatic, hop utilization, “cool pool”, etc)
  • Thorough knowledge of mechanical and technical aspects related to brewhouse engineering, motors, pumps, sensors, etc.

  • Training and Support
  • Work with other production managers and leads to properly communicate brewhouse operations
  • Train all new brewers on brewhouse operations
  • Support and manage cellar/packaging team as needed when other leads are not available
  • Record any issues with the brew house and communicate them with Treesse 

Job Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience in a brewery production leadership role
  • Proven effective management skills
  • Ability to multi-task and to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Strong technology skills and comfortable adopting technology tools
  • Experience working in a paperless environment strongly preferred
  • Ability to lift and move up to 75 pounds, climb steep stairs repeatedly, twist/turn, reach over shoulders, bend/stoop and stand/walk on a continual basis
  • Willingness to be frequently exposed to wet conditions and work in extreme cold or hot conditions
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and do physically demanding work is required. 
  • Willingness to work with strong cleaning agents is required.

Physical Requirements/Work Environment:

  • Ability to frequently sit, stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl.
  • Physical work includes climbing stairs, climbing into tanks, pulling hoses, etc.
  • Brewery environment:
  • Conditions can run from wet, hot and cold conditions, depending on season.
  • Ability to work in frequently loud environments.
  •  Ability/knowledge to safely work with chemicals present in the brewery.
  • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and lift and/or move over 50 pounds with or without assistance.
